Celebrities, do they assign chores like regular folks?
Celebrity parents are just like us! Minus the big bank accounts and appearances on magazine covers. However, do all celebrities use a chore chart?
Celebrities face the same challenges you face when it comes to rearing children.
In fact, many of you may be curious about the ways famous moms and dads choose to parent their children.
In this post, we’ll take a look at celebrity parents, the methods they use to keep their kids disciplined and for fun, the chore chart stickers that might coincide with their methods.
Gwen Stefani Uses a Chore Chart
Former No Doubt frontwoman and age-defying hit-maker, Gwen Stefani, has three sons and guides their behaviour with a discipline chart.
In an interview with People, she said, “I see a constant fear of ‘How am I gonna make sure these kids are good people?’ I feel like naturally, it’s so easy for them to be naughty, and you get more and more worried about it the older they get.”
That’s a concern that millions of parents worldwide likely share.
Since Gwen is focused on her kids becoming “good people”, we’ll make a guess that she would use the “Be Kind” sticker on our My Starry Chart board.
She might also use “Be Polite” or “Be Patient” stickers.
Then again, we’d say every celebrity parent would use those stickers at some point.
Michelle Obama
How do you as parents keep your kids off the screen in the year 2020?
Well, the former First Lady’s advice from 2011 keeps it plain and simple.
“The girls have limited television and screen time – none during the week unless it’s school-related because now kids are doing these video-chat study groups,” she said in reference to Sasha and Malia. Michelle continued, “And when they’re doing that, I always go in their room to make sure they’re actually talking about school.”
Michelle isn’t against technology. However, she doesn’t want gadgets interfering with her girls’ work.
It’s safe to say that Michelle would plaster a “Do Your Homework” sticker on a chore chart so that her daughters can see. As well as Sasha and Malia’s friends on the other side of the camera!
Madonna
Madge has cemented herself as a cultural icon. And she will no doubt go down as an iconic parent, too.
She’s already revealed to the world that her daughter, Lourdes, won’t be allowed to date until she’s 18-year-old!
She’s also put limits on Lourdes’ entertaining and food choices.
“Late-night TV, junk food and mess are not tolerated in my house,” she says.
For the first two “no-nos”, Madonna would likely put a “Practice Your Reading” sticker (to counteract late-night TV watching).
Then, an “Eat Your Veggies” sticker (for Lourdes to abstain from junk food).
And as for the last one on messes? Here’s what Madonna had to say.
“My daughter has a problem picking things up in her room. So if you leave your clothes on the floor, they’re gone when you come home.” That definitely warrants a high-five and “Clean Your Room” sticker.
Mayim Bialik
Mayim Bialik seems to have adopted a traditional stance on giving chores.
For example, her kids have proposed the frequently asked question of whether they can get an allowance for their chores. Bialik’s response?
“I say, ‘I don’t get paid for my chores. I’m not paying you for yours.’”
Bialik is the poster-child (or poster-mother) for helping kids do things based on intrinsic motivation, a topic we’ve discussed before.
Now, she doesn’t mention specifically what chores she assigns her kids, but we have just the right sticker for her – our “Help Mom” sticker.
After all, simply doing one’s chores without hassling mum for money would give her peace of mind.
What better way to help a busy Hollywood mother!
Chip Gaines
Chip (and Joanna) sure know how to build a house. But they’re also perfectly adept at raising a “home”, as well.
They stay traditional to keep their kids in line and their methods will likely resonate with parents.
“I feel a little bit like a drill sergeant sometimes,” Gaines said to People. So he’s clearly no-nonsense.
Here’s one that earns him major kudos in today’s world: “We keep telling the kids they don’t get a phone until they go off to college.”
Let’s hope that Chip and Joanna don’t cave because that’s going to be a tough one.
We’d say Chip and Joanna want their kids to focus on school and education.
So the Gaines would probably use a “Do Your Homework” and “Practice Your Reading” sticker, when playing with My Starry Chart.
Nick Cannon
Nick and Mariah currently raise two adorable twins – Moroccan and Monroe.
Cuteness aside, Nick has made it clear that they need to be reminded of who’s boss at home.
Nick admits: “My kids, – it’s a blessing – they’re extremely disciplined,” he told People. But at times, he mentioned that they try to misbehave with other people.
With mom and dad though, Moroccan and Monroe don’t need to be told to do anything twice.
“We ask them to have a seat, they sit down, cross their legs, and put their hands in their lap,” Cannon says. “I’ve got the loudest voice in the house, so they’ve always responded to that ever since they were newborns.”
Sounds like Nick has a set of vocal chords, just like Mariah.
With that said, Nick and Mariah’s emphasis on following orders and good behaviour leads us to believe that they’d use “Be a Good Listener” and “Be Polite” stickers.
Fame, Fortune and Kids’ Chores
Celebrity parents try their best to figure out this whole parenting thing just like you do.
The ones above seem to have systems that work well for them, some of which may work well for you.
The key takeaway here is not so much what stickers they might theoretically use or even their methods, but the fact that it takes time and experimentation to find what works as a parent.
Whether parents are famous or not, the common factor remains: we share the same reality. Every household will need to have their own set of rules to function in harmony. And to instill good behaviour, responsibility and a sense of routine.
